Bear Mountain, New York

26.2-mile training run
May 8, 2010. Bear Mt. New York. Northeast Regional North Face Endurance Challenge 50-Miler. Aaron Rome headed out to this race for the second consecutive year and cut a nice chunk off last year's time. In his own words: "I enjoyed it this year. Last year was just survival and I was not sure I would even finish. This time, the weather was perfect surroundings very serene. I ran the race in light weight trail shoes, akin to racing flats with treads. Almost no padding or support, but compared to the Vibrams I have been wearing it was like running on clouds. The trail included about 7000' of climb/ descent, and the beginning was the toughest with lots of steep river beds and hand over hand climbing in sections. We lost the trail for about 2 minutes and you would have thought the world was about to end. One of the great things about a race like this is nothing else relevant for those hours. It's a nice release. I had no cramping or pain until about mile 40. Miles 40-45 were tough - knee pain on descents - but the last 5 miles adreneline pretty much took over. The worst part of the race for me was re-fueling. I have no apetite during these things. You have to eat at least 600 calories/hour and the potatoes and PBJ sandwiches I was munching at every aid-station stop makes me want to puke for the next mile. I ended up taking about 25 minutes off my time from last year, finishing in 11 hours 40 minutes, placing 61/173." This week's photo is Arron finishing the Exeter Marathon, which he used as a training run three weeks earlier.
